Candles |
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) identifies and tracks the causes of fires. Since the early 1990's the sales of candles have increased by 10 to 15 percent per year. The percentage of home fires started by candles have nearly tripled between 1980 and 1997. Where candle fires typically start: - 44% in bedrooms - 19% in living/family rooms and dens - 7% in kitchens - 4% in dining rooms - 26% in other locations - Nineteen percent of candle fires result from candles that are left unattended. - December is the peak month for candle fires. Twice the number of candle fires are reported during December as reported during an average month. - Do not leave candles unattended. - Keep candles at least 12 inches from combustibles such as paper products, curtains/blinds, Christmas decorations, furniture coverings and the like. - Keep candles out of reach of children or pets. - Use a stable, non-combustible candle holder. Ensure candleholders are large enough to contain the melted wax and flame. - Place candleholders on a sturdy surface to minimize chances of being knocked over. - Have an A-B-C dry chemical extinguisher close by.
